When my boys were young I was a single parent on a budget.  I would go over my finances and try to figure out why I was supporting three sons, four hamsters, goldfish, two cats, and a puppy.  Just when I thought we were stretched beyond our limits, my youngest son marched in holding a parrot cage containing a bright, happy little bird.  He looked up and, with his nine-year-old logic asked, “What is a family without a parrot?”.  His new feathered friend had been abandoned by the people who moved out next door so she became part of our family.  Somehow we managed to get through the next several years just fine.  Everyone got fed and loved, despite our limited resources.
