Whenever you lift something heavy you exert yourself, now whenever you exert yourself past your muscles limits they respond by tearing, and the repairing of those torn muscles is what causes muscle growth. What happens is by lifting those weights you are pushing your muscles to which they respond by stretching, now if enough force is applied such as bench pressing a heavy amount multiple times your muscles tissue will literally tear and that is why you feel a burning sensation. After a workout your muscles slowly begin to repair themselves which they do by using up the bodies protein, now the miracle of the human body is that whenever you push your muscles and they tear the body repairs them back stronger than they were before.
