The New Zealand Geographic Board made an announcement recently that they will be renaming the South Ridge of New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki/Mount Cook after the country’s most famous mountaineer and explorer. Adventurous Kiwi Sir Edmund Hillary and his Nepali Sherpa Tenzig Norgay were the first people ever to reach the top of the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, and their mountaineering adventures have gone down in history. Hillary’s link to Aoraki/Mount Cook is that he was also the first man to conquer the South Ridge in 1948. The proposal from the Geographic Board intends to change the name to Hillary Ridge. rename
